- Thousands of people being brutally murdered
- Women and children seeking refuge in buildings , being burnt alive
- Fathers who died protecting their families
- Mothers who cried loosing their children
- Villages once filled with happy families , now seen only as ashes on the ground
- Brother turning against Brother , slashing , shooting and looting
- Watching Kenyan soil being soaked in the Blood of its People
Finally , the Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki and Opposition leader Raila Odinga signed a power-sharing agreement ,ending months of nationwide violence and political unrest which followed a disputed election.
Everyday when watching the news i was greeted by scenes of terrible violence from Kenya . Today , a mother told how her son was beheaded on the way to school , the next day an eye witness tells of the screams he heard coming from the people trapped in a church that was being set afire by the opposition tribe , the day after an orphan tells how he saw his parents being beheaded right in front of him , the following day a feature story on Gang members in Kenya showing their collection of machete , guns and knives , promising more violence if their leader did not come to power , the next day reports of more deaths ....more ... more . Will it never stop ?
In wake of violence after the disputed presidential election on December 27 , the recorded number of deaths till today is 1,500 along with 300,000 displaced people.
Both sides, despite witnessing the daily bloodshed didn't make much effort to call their supporters to back down . Were both parties fighting so hard for power, for the future of their country ?
If so, at what cost ?
The lives of the people they were meant to protect ?
If they had come to this compromise earlier, set their egos and differences aside, think of the future of their country . Then , the orphan wouldn't have lost his family , the mother wouldn't have lost her son and the machetes would be used for cutting plants not heads .
I'm glad that an agreement has been reached between the two parties . But i hope that as they signed the agreement , they saw the bloodstains on it , reminding them of the cost it came. How smoothly this power sharing agreement among these two opposing forces will run ? Well Abraham Lincoln once said , " A house divided against itself cannot stand " . I sure hope they can prove him wrong .
A country whose wounds have been cut open so many times , hopefully is finally given the chance to heal.
- "Politics is war without bloodshed while war is politics with bloodshed."
